Meet the Experts—Kevin Harper

In today’s edition of Meet the Experts, we speak with Kevin Harper, Business Development Manager, Defence Solutions.

Can you tell me a bit about your background and your role at Calian?

I come from an engineering background with over 16 years of experience of developing and delivering programs in the defence industry—and half of that time serving as a project manager.

I’ve been with the Calian defence team for just over two years now. Currently, I serve as the Business Development Manager for the defence portfolio. In my role, I collaborate across various business units within the company, coordinating Calian’s capabilities so we can effectively address the needs of our defence clients while also ensuring alignment with our overarching business development goals.

How is your role linked with Canadian national defence?

In defence procurement, large contracts are often awarded to a single company or joint venture. In cases where Calian acts as the prime contractor, I play a direct role in supporting programs, such as initiatives with the Department of National Defence (DND), aimed at enhancing Canada’s defense capabilities.

Additionally, I collaborate on programs that support other defence prime contractors and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) within Canada. These instances are where Calian indirectly supports a defence program as a subcontractor, by contributing specialized resources and expertise.

Whether directly or indirectly, Calian is an integral part of the national defence ecosystem—providing electronics and communication systems integration, which are critical components of modern defence initiatives.

Building and maintaining strong relationships with prime contractors, OEMs and the DND is paramount to my role.

How does your role support the security of Canada and the rest of the world?

My role contributes to national security and the world-at-large through the relationships and collaborations I foster. These partnerships are essential for Calian to deliver cutting-edge solutions and services—encompassing technology, training and personnel—that are aligned with Canada’s defence objectives.

My focus extends to ensuring that our Armed Forces have the requisite tools and capabilities for their operational requirements. Through ongoing collaboration, my role helps enhance not only Canada’s security posture but also contributes to global stability on a broader scale.

What is your favourite part of your job?

My favorite aspect of my job is undoubtedly the people. I have the privilege of meeting and working with a diverse group of individuals who all share a common goal—contributing to national security.

This connection extends both internally within our organization and externally with our partners. I find immense satisfaction in learning about their roles within their respective organizations and exploring opportunities for collaboration. Executing a successful project across so many people and organizations is a lot of work and coordination, but the sense of fulfillment is truly rewarding.

How does your work at Calian fit with your view of your place in the world?

I strongly believe that active Canadian involvement in international peace and security efforts contributes to a better, safer and more prosperous world. With Calian playing a crucial role in supporting Canada’s endeavours in this regard, it reinforces my belief in the importance of our collaborative and collective efforts.

What are you looking forward to at CANSEC?

The defence industry is ideal for individuals who thrive in dynamic environments with many moving parts—both figuratively and literally. As a result, you’ll often see people transitioning between companies, organizations continually pursuing new projects, and needs and collaborative opportunities evolving from one CANSEC to the next.

CANSEC provides an excellent opportunity for reconnecting with industry colleagues and members of the Canadian Armed Forces. I’m looking forward to having face-time with them, hearing about their experiences and initiatives over the past year, and exploring opportunities for Calian to offer support.

I’m also excited to showcase why Calian is such a great place to work. I encourage everyone to come and talk to us at CANSEC!

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy spending time in the great outdoors with my family. Whether it’s hitting the slopes for some skiing in the winter or exploring the trails on our bikes during the warmer months, outdoor activities are a significant part of our lives. Gatineau Park, in particular, is a frequent destination for our adventures.
