Meet the Experts—Dr. Nina Fusco
In today’s edition of Meet the Experts, we speak with Dr. Nina Fusco, Calian’s Chief Psychologist.
Can you tell me a bit about your background and your role at Calian?
As the Chief Psychologist for Calian’s Health business unit, I oversee the Psychological Services program. As part of my role, I conduct suitability assessments for individuals working in law enforcement—including policing, border services, corrections officers and more—supporting the health and wellbeing of the clients we serve.
I joined Calian in late 2023 and bring with me a background in forensic psychology, which has been the focus of most of my career. Following 12 years of experience in forensic settings and corrections, I have also served as a staff psychologist for a major police force.
My expertise lies in areas such as risk assessment for the courts, suicide assessments, crisis intervention and trauma-focused care for crime victims. I’ve always been passionate about the intersection of law and psychology, which is reflected in my career trajectory.
How is your role linked with Canadian national defence?
While my current role doesn’t directly extend to the Department of National Defence (DND), Calian is involved in conducting suitability assessments for the military police, and providing healthcare staff for the military to ensure they receive the necessary support for their roles.
I currently support several federal public safety agencies, provincial agencies and municipalities with services provided by Calian’s Psychological Services division. My focus is on suitability assessments within law enforcement, which aligns closely with the needs of various security and defence agencies.
How does your role support the security of Canada and the rest of the world?
I conduct psychological assessments to screen individuals who will play critical roles in maintaining Canada’s security—ensuring that candidates selected by various law enforcement agencies are psychologically suitable and possess the necessary characteristics essential for the job. I also oversee assessments for organizations such as the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), to ensure individuals are fit to return to duty, safely, after being temporarily removed from their role. This responsibility extends to border services officers stationed at various border offices across the country.
What is your favourite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is the opportunity to meet our customers face-to-face. Policing has always been of great interest to me—with multiple family members in law enforcement, I’ve always had immense respect and admiration for those who help keep our country safe. Being able to interact directly with the people who work for these agencies is incredibly fulfilling. I value being a part of their world, understanding their challenges and playing a role in supporting the future of law enforcement. It’s truly rewarding to contribute to their success and well-being in any way I can.
How does your work at Calian fit with your view of your place in the world?
As a psychologist, I believe in the power of making a difference, even in small ways, in the lives of many individuals. This collective impact can have significant ripple effects on a larger scale.
At Calian, I play a part in starting people off in their careers by ensuring we recommend the right individuals who are not only suitable but also capable of withstanding the demands of stressful, high-risk jobs.
Calian’s commitment to helping people do hard things resonates with me deeply, and it was one of the reasons I was drawn to work here. We prioritize making others’ jobs easier and better, particularly for those facing exceptionally challenging tasks.
I like to think I’ve been able to make a positive difference—whether directly or indirectly—in the lives of many individuals who, in turn, go on to make significant contributions to our world.
What are you looking forward to at CANSEC?
I’m particularly looking forward to meeting individuals who serve their country in various capacities. It’s inspiring to connect with people who regularly set aside their own needs or interests for the greater good. I have profound admiration and respect for those who are willing to put their lives on the line and make sacrifices, including time away from their families.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Firstly, being a mom to my nine-year-old daughter brings immense joy to my life. Whether it’s assembling a trampoline together or simply spending quality time with her, these moments are truly precious to me.
Maintaining an active lifestyle is essential to me, so I incorporate daily workouts into my routine—whether that’s cycling, cross-country skiing, hiking or something else. I’ve also always loved playing soccer—I’ve played for almost 30 years and am currently coaching my daughter’s soccer team.
I’m also a self-proclaimed foodie, an avid NFL fan, and regularly attend Broadway shows, musicals, and live music performances.
