CALIAN'S SYSTEMS ENGINEERING DIVISION WINS MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR CONTRACT WITH HUGHES NETWORK SYSTEMS
Kanata, Ontario, March 29, 2001: Calian ( TSE.CTY ) is pleased to announce that its Systems Engineering Division has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract from Hughes Network Systems (HNS) of Germantown, Maryland.
Under the terms of the HNS contract, Calian's System Engineering Division will provide the Radio Frequency Subsystem (RFS) for the Inmarsat Mobile Broadband Programme. The RFS provides the transmission and reception of RF signals between the ground-based Satellite Access System and the regional satellite, and comprises a 13m antenna, RF equipment, power calibration equipment, and monitor and control system. On-site installation of the RFS is planned for January 2002.
Inmarsat's new service, planned for launch in 2002, uses leased capacity on the Thuraya satellite. According to Inmarsat, this new service means Inmarsat can start to deliver broadband data services via satellite to their customers in advance of the next generation Inmarsat I-4 satellite system planned for 2004. The new service provided over the Thuraya satellite system will support data rates of up to 144 kbit/s.
